Accounting for believers
The first of many miraculous experiences
of God's hand at work in my life happened at work 38 years ago, but I
still recall it clearly.
I had been put in charge of the
accounting section of the local branch of an insurance company. The
books had not been balanced for three months and I did not have much
idea of how the system worked.
I spent many days of forlorn
searching for information that would help in reconciling the accounts.
Eventually I was able to determine the amount by which the books were
off, but could not pinpoint where the mistake had been made.
Finally I turned to the Lord in prayer. I said, "Lord, please help me.
I don't know what to do. We desperately need to get the books balanced.
Please help us find the error."
Then something made me add,
"By 2:00 p.m. today." This gave me a strange feeling that I can't
describe, but I went on calmly with my work.
That afternoon,
one of the bookkeepers came up to me with a ledger card. She showed me
a current entry which was out of order, about two years prior to the
present year's entries. It was the exact amount that we were missing.
I looked at my watch: 2:00 p.m.! I wanted to stand on my desk and
shout, "That's my God!" I only wished I had told everyone of my prayer
beforehand.
